SOLUTIONS • PACKAGING

Eye-tracking on shelf. Before the line runs.

Pack design, virtual shelf testing, first-moment-of-truth (FMOT) studies. The methodology that caught the Bertolli mistake before it happened.

THE PROBLEM

Pack designs that win in the studio, lose on shelf.

Packaging is judged in two contexts: the comp, where designers see one option in isolation, and the shelf, where the consumer sees forty competitors at six feet, in three seconds, while pushing a cart.

Survey-based pack testing rewards the design that looks best in isolation. Shelf reality rewards the design that wins attention against competitors. These are not the same design, and the gap between them is where launch failures live.

WHAT YOU CAN RUN

Methods built for the moment of truth.

01 / 06

Virtual shelf

Realistic shelf simulation with eye-tracking. Where attention lands, what it skips, how long it takes to find the design you're testing.

02 / 06

Pack design comparison

Multiple pack designs tested head-to-head. Implicit + survey + eye-tracking on each.

03 / 06

FMOT studies

First Moment of Truth — the 3-7 seconds when a shopper picks or skips. Eye-tracking on shelf footage with timing data.

04 / 06

Brand block visibility

Does your brand block hold against competitors? Eye-tracking on category shelves answers this.

05 / 06

Color and contrast tests

Color implications, contrast against shelf, recognition speed. Implicit reaction time on pack variants.

06 / 06

Pre-launch prototype testing

Pack mockups tested at scale before printing. Multiple regions, multiple consumers, in days.

WHEN PACKAGING ISN'T THE ANSWER

Sometimes the brief is wrong.

The Bertolli case was a packaging brief. Sales were down; the team assumed pack design was the lever. Survey-stated preference confirmed: consumers said they preferred the new bottle. Behavioral measurement on shelf revealed otherwise — the redesign hurt visual recognition, and shoppers walked past it.

The actual answer was a small pricing adjustment. The packaging research saved the company from spending an eight-figure redesign budget on the wrong problem.
